People Buy Your Vision

People Buy Your Vision

Purpose: People buy into a vision. People want to be part of something.

Here is a daring thought. Meet one-on-one with each of your staff and ask what they want out of life. Ready for some funny looks? You will probably get some funny looks.

I did this very thing this year. I sat down with each of them and asked them questions like:

What is important to you?
What do you enjoy doing?
Who is important to you?
What do you want to experience?
What did you wish you had more of?
Describe the ideal you
What have you always dreamed of doing?
What would you like to see in your life in 2 years? 5 years? 10 years?

The fact is that whoever works with me is a partner in my eyes. My reasoning is this:

I have a desire to build a great company that romances everyone it touches, whether they are within the company or outside of it. That vision to me has multiple divisions of services, businesses, organizations, etc. I am willing to put in the time, money, risk, effort, and risk suffering failures to make it happen. Plus, my life events and path have led me to a passion and knowledge for business, and a willingness to invest in myself to build the business. That is my path.

Not everyone has that same desire as me. Some are more than happy to have a secure, stable, 9-5 position within Stratford Price. That way they have predictability, security, consistency, and family time.

I tell every team member that I recognize and acknowledge that each day, they are devoting to Stratford Price is time they will never have back. It is spent and forever gone. Their hard work allows me to have the time freedom to create new divisions, and grab a hold of new opportunities.

In reward for their loyalty, I am actively making plans to listen to my team and help them get what they want. I also make each one of them a part owner in whatever division I create. That way, they can have their job and passive income from having part ownership in multiple businesses.

I told my team that this process is not going to happen overnight but will take time. I told them I don’t have everything figured out but I have a vision that compels me every day and I am willing to work my hardest at it. They understood where I was coming from and were unbelievably appreciative.

In short, I believe life is worth living for love and romance. Use business as a means of expression of that spirit. That’s Business Romance.

Business is a Canvas

Business is a Canvas

I was listening to an audiobook this morning on my drive into the office. The book was called “Business Stripped Bare – The Adventures of a Global Entrepreneur”. The book is written by Richard Branson. Of all the things you could spend your time doing, please read/listen to this book.

Business is creative. It’s like painting. You start with a blank canvas and you can paint ANYTHING! You can paint a business that has meaning, accomplishes something, and leaves a legacy. For any good painting you can produce, it is also worth noting that there are a million bad paintings that are just aching to drip off your brush.

Most people think business is about managing a process. Yes, that is part of it. Process is important and delivery is important. It is VITAL. However, management never grew a business. Growth comes from change. Change comes from challenging the status quo. Challenging the status quo means risk, not giving in to the lie of your own fear, and deciding to just be a badass at what you are dedicating yourself to right now.

Branson was asked why he went into business and he didn’t really know how to answer. It was never his intention to go into business. He simply said that “if an individual cares about something or has a concern for it, you are in business” and that he was only interested in “creating things.”

What really matters in business is what you create. Just as the heart and soul of Stratford Price is romance, using the backdrop of business, your work is not a separation of yourself. In that sense, I tell my team that they are open to create. I tell them to MAKE TODAY EXTRAORDINARY!
